Election Day – agree to disagree

With the 2024 U.S. presidential election next week, our therapists in Spanish Fork recognize that Americans are feeling increasingly stressed about politics.

When political polarization is high, the consequences for our personal relationships are significant. Around a third of adults said the political climate has caused strain for them and their family members, while 30% said they limit their time with family because they don’t share the same values.

Arthur Brooks wrote a book called Love Your Enemies: How Decent People Can Save America from the Culture of Contempt. He shares this thought: “There is a special bond among Americans who stand up for one another when they disagree. Have you done that recently? If not, you’re missing out on a great source of joy. If you’re still not convinced, try the following and see how it makes you feel. Defend someone with whom you disagree, simply because he or she has a right to an opinion and the right to be heard. Take note that your heart will be on fire when you do it.”

Disagreeing with someone you care about is ok. It is important to remember that you are not always going to agree with everyone. It is ok to agree to disagree. Your personal opinions and beliefs make you unique. It might be hard to accept that a loved one or friend may have opposing ideologies than you, but understanding their viewpoints will help contribute to healthy relationships. As you engage in conversations with others, don’t forget to spend some time and energy focused on areas where you do agree. This can really make your areas of disagreement feel less intense and your stress may decrease.
