Frequently Asked Questions

Will insurance cover my therapy?

Insurance coverage varies depending on your plan. While we verify your benefits before your first appointment, we cannot guarantee coverage or payment amounts. Some plans may limit coverage to specific diagnoses or a certain number of sessions.

Our support staff will contact your insurance provider before your first visit to estimate your payment and review your options. Ultimately, the policyholder is responsible for payment if insurance does not cover a portion of the treatment.

What does the insurance provider know about my therapy?

Insurance companies require a diagnosis to process claims. In rare cases, they may also request limited treatment details, such as progress reports or a care plan, to continue coverage. If this happens, your provider will explain what information would be shared and why, so you remain fully informed.

What can I expect at my first session?

At Alliance Psychology, we focus on creating a welcoming, professional, and supportive experience from your first contact with our team. Before your appointment, you’ll receive a secure link to complete intake paperwork. This helps your provider prepare for your session and have relevant information for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

During your first visit, our providers strive to create a warm and safe space so you can feel comfortable and share your concerns, history, and goals for therapy. At the end of the first session, your provider will then share the diagnosis and a general treatment plan to help you know what to expect moving forward.

To get started with therapy, call us at (801) 224-2313 or complete our online form.

How long does therapy usually last?

The length of therapy depends on your goals and the challenges you’re facing. Some patients notice improvement in just a few months, while others benefit from ongoing therapy for long-term support. Your therapist will discuss your goals and regularly review progress with you.

What if I need medication?

While Alliance Psychology does not prescribe medication, we collaborate closely with psychiatrists and medical providers when medication may be helpful as part of your treatment plan.

What are the limits to confidentiality?

Your privacy is protected by law. Mental health providers and support staff are required to keep your personal health information confidential. However, there are a few legal exceptions when disclosure is required, such as when there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse or neglect, or a court order. You can also sign a written release if you wish for your provider to share information with another party (such as a physician or family member).

What’s the difference between a therapist, psychologist, counselor, and psychiatrist?

Different mental health professionals have varying levels of training and approaches to care.

  • Psychologists typically hold doctoral degrees (PhD or PsyD) and specialize in assessment, diagnosis, and therapy.
  • Therapists, counselors, and social workers provide talk therapy and behavioral interventions, often focusing on emotional and relational growth.
  • Marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) focus on relationship systems and family dynamics.
  • Psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners are medical providers who can prescribe medication.

Regardless of their title, all providers at Alliance Psychology share a common goal: building a strong therapeutic alliance that supports meaningful progress and long-term well-being.

What is HIPAA?

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) protects your personal health information. Although your health record is the property of Alliance Psychology, the information belongs to you. You have the right to:

  • Request restrictions on how we use or share your information.
  • Request communication through a specific phone number or address.
